Eleven people were killed in a car accident after a large truck crossed a Kentucky highway median on March 26, 2010 and crashed head-on into a church van. According to an Associated Press news report, the crash occurred on a highway near Munfordville, about 75 miles south of Louisville. The van was carrying a Mennonite family on its way to a wedding. Everybody in the van died except for two children. The driver of the tractor-trailer also died in the collision.
My heart goes out to the family and friends of these victims. What a devastating blow to lose 11 members so suddenly and tragically! I pray for the two young children who survived this crash. This family will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers.
Deadliest Accident in Recent History
This fatal car crash is apparently one of the deadliest accidents in recent Kentucky history. On May 14, 1988, 27 people were killed in a bus crash caused by a drunk driver.
In this particular van versus truck accident, there are no details yet on how and why the truck driver crossed over the median and struck the family’s van. Was the driver intoxicated? Did the driver fall asleep at the wheel? Was he or she distracted or driving recklessly at the time of the accident? I trust officials are investigating these and other details of the crash.
Wrongful Death Claims
In this accident, if the truck driver is determined to have been negligent, then, the trucking company can be held civilly liable for the wrongful deaths. Surviving family members will be able to file a wrongful death claim against negligent parties seeking compensation to cover funeral expenses, lost future earnings, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages.
The family of the victims of this tragic accident would be well-advised to contact my friend and Louisville Kentucky personal injury lawyer Mike Schafer to find out how to pursue their legal rights.
