Man Killed and Daughter in Coma after Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Crash

Jose Arriola, 38, was killed and his 7-year-old daughter, Anjelica Arriola was critically injured in a Los Angeles car accident involving a hit-and-run driver. According to a KABC news report, the fatal car accident occurred near Santa Ana Boulevard and Watts Avenue in Willowbrook, the evening of April 20, 2012. Officials say Erica Arriola was walking a few steps behind her husband and daughter in a crosswalk when she witnessed a pearl white Cadillac Escalade race toward them. Jose grabbed Anjelica and took the brunt of the impact.

A CBS news report states that Jose was pronounced dead at a nearby medical facility and that his 7-year-old daughter is in a coma. Officials are searching for a heavy-set Latino man with a short haircut and a goatee who was driving the Cadillac. The vehicle sustained damaged to its right front fender, front bumper and grill. If you have any information that could help investigators, please call Los Angeles County California Highway Patrol at (323) 259-2010.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Jose Arriola following this tragic pedestrian accident. My heart also goes out to the young victim who has been critically injured in this hit-and-run car accident. Please keep the Arriola family in your thoughts and prayers.

Los Angeles Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to CHP’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 29 people were killed and 327 were injured in pedestrian accidents in the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County. During that same year, 179 fatalities and 4,918 injuries occurred as a result of pedestrian accidents, countywide.

Hit-and-Run Accidents

Based on the news accounts, the driver of the Cadillac Escalade hit Jose Arriola and his young daughter. Then, this driver left the fatally injured man and his critically injured daughter on the roadway without even stopping to offer any type of assistance. Unconscionable! Not only is leaving the scene of the crash an inhumane and irresponsible act, but it is also illegal.

California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”
