Eriber Lopez, 25, was killed in a Los Angeles area car accident, which officials say involved a head-on collision. According to a report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the fatal collision occurred the evening of April 24, 2012 on Pacific Coast Highway. Police say Lopez was driving a Buick Regal south on the coastal route when the car swerved into a northbound Honda Accord near Tuna Canyon. Lopez’s car ignited following the collision and he died from his injuries. The driver of the Honda was treated for head and back injuries, but he is expected to survive. Officials are looking into what caused this fatal crash.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Eriber Lopez for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. My thoughts and prayers are also with the other driver who was injured. I wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were two fatalities and 117 injuries involving car accidents in Malibu. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 554 people died and 50,817 were injured due to car accidents, during the same year.
What Caused This Crash?
Based on this news article, it appears that the driver of the Buick, Lopez, swerved into opposing lanes of traffic and collided head-on with the Honda. California Vehicle Code Section 21651 (a) states: “Whenever a highway has been divided into two or more roadways by means of intermittent barriers or by means of a dividing section of not less than two feet in width, either unpaved or delineated by curbs, double-parallel lines, or other markings on the roadway, it is unlawful…to drive any vehicle over, upon, or across the dividing section.”
There are still a number of questions that remain unanswered at this time. Was Lopez fatigued, distracted, inattentive, impaired or otherwise negligent? Did an auto defect or mechanical malfunction cause this accident? Did a dangerous condition on the roadway contribute to this collision? I trust officials are looking into these or other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.
Protecting Victims’ Rights
In such cases, injured victims or families of deceased victims would be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable. It would be a good idea in these types of accidents to preserve the vehicles so an expert can thoroughly examine it for product defects, malfunctions and other evidence.
