Michael Ruiz, 23, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident when his vehicle lost control and crashed into the center median. According to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the fatal car accident occurred on the 60 Freeway in Monterey Park, early morning on August 8, 2011. Ruiz’s 1991 Acura crashed into an on-ramp divider before veering and striking a center median. A second vehicle then hit the driver’s side of the Acura. An investigation is ongoing.
My heart goes out to the friends and family of Michael Ruiz following this tragic accident. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person was killed and 174 were injured in Monterey Park car accidents. During that same year, 554 fatalities and 50,817 injuries occurred involving Los Angeles County car accidents.
What Caused This Fatal Car Accident?
Based on this news report, it is not clear how or why this fatal car accident happened. There are still many unanswered questions here. What caused the Acura to veer out of control in the first place? Did an auto defect or mechanical malfunction cause this crash? Did the design of the ramp or highway make it dangerous for motorists? Does the crash site have a history of serious injury accidents? Did alcohol, fatigue, or distracted driving play a part? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine what occurred here and why.
In such cases, it would be in the family’s best interests to preserve the vehicle in its current crashed state, unaltered, so it can be examined for vehicle defects, malfunctions and other evidence. If this car accident was caused by an auto product defect, then, the auto maker could be held liable for the victim’s wrongful death. If a dangerous roadway caused the accident, the governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway could also be held liable. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will better advise victims’ families about their legal rights and options.
