Man Killed in Orange County Motorcycle Accident

Mark Miller, 75, was killed in an Orange County motorcycle accident after a pickup truck hit him on the SR-133 toll road in Irvine. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal motorcycle accident occurred the afternoon of August 22, 2017. California Highway Patrol officials say the motorcycle and the pickup truck were both traveling on the toll road.

Crash on SR-133 Toll Road

The motorcyclist was riding a Honda Silver Wing in the number 4 northbound lane just south of Great Park Boulevard in front of the truck. Miller was riding at 60 mph and the truck was right behind him at 70 mph. The pickup, a Ford F-150, approached the motorcyclist and veered to the left, then veered back to the right, hitting the motorcycle. Miller was thrown off the motorcycle and hit the roadway.

He suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at an area hospital. The driver of the truck, a 31-year-old Santa Ana man, was uninjured. Officials do not suspect the involvement of alcohol or drugs. Anyone who saw the accident is asked to call CHP officials at 714-567-6000.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 4,976 people died in motorcycle accidents, which is up 8.3 percent from 4,594 in 2014. In 2015, about 88,000 motorcyclists were injured, which was down 4.3 percent from 92,000 in 2014. Also, in 2015, motorcyclists were 29 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a crash per vehicle mile traveled, and almost five times more likely to be injured. During the same year, motorcyclists accounted for 14 percent of all traffic fatalities, 4 percent of all people injured, 17 percent of all occupant (driver and passenger) fatalities, and 4 percent of all occupants injured.

Ongoing Investigation and Liability

In this particular case, it is unclear as to why the driver of the pickup truck veered and struck the motorcyclist. There are still a number of questions here. Was he distracted or inattentive at the time? Was excessive speed a factor? Was he impaired at the time? Did he attempt an unsafe lane change? We trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.
