Metro Blue Line Train Accident in Long Beach Proves Fatal for Motorist

A 26-year-old man was killed in a Long Beach car accident after a Metro Blue Line train struck his car. According to The Press-Telegram, the fatal accident occurred the night of August 30, 2012 at Long Beach Boulevard and 19th Street. Officials say the man was driving north on Long Beach Boulevard and turned left at 19th Street despite a posted sign against turns. The car was then hit by the train. The man, who was trapped inside the vehicle, died at the scene. Four passengers in the train – three men and one woman — were injured. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact Long Beach Police Department at 562-570-7355. The investigation is ongoing.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of the deceased train accident victim. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers. I also wish the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Crash Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2010 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 27 fatalities and 1,877 injuries occurred involving car accidents in Long Beach. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 530 people died and 50,513 were injured due to car accidents during the same year.

Causes and Compensation Issues

Based on this news account, it is not entirely clear as to why the driver made a left turn at the intersection. There are several questions that remain here. Was this accident the car driver’s fault? Did the train operator sound the horn at the intersection? Were there warning signs at the track? Were the signs clearly visible? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.

In such cases, it is important for injured victims and families of deceased victims to contact an experienced Long Beach personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable. Injured victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Families of deceased victims can file a wrongful death claim seeking damages. The best personal injury law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive case evaluation to injured victims or their families.
