Metrolink Train Accident Critically Injures Two

A San Fernando Valley car accident involving a Metrolink commuter train caused critical injuries to two people including a baby. The Los Angeles Times reports that the accident happened the morning of December 23, 2009 near the intersection of North San Fernando Road and Branford Street. The incident occurred after two cars crashed on San Fernando Road. One of the cars got pushed on to the tracks where it was struck by the train. The Metrolink train that was going from Los Angeles to Lancaster had a number of passengers and officials say at least 30 of them sustained minor injuries as a result of this collision. Two others in the cars were also injured, but the extent of their injuries is not known.

I sympathize with all the injured victims here. It’s indeed fortunate that more people were not seriously hurt. I wish all these victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery and hope that the two critically injured victims, including the infant, make it through their injuries.

Car Accident Statistics

There were 260 deaths and 27,110 injuries involving car accidents in the city of Los Angeles in 2007, according to California Highway Patrol’s traffic accident statistics. In Los Angeles County as a whole, car accidents claimed 712 lives and 56,475 injuries during the same year.

What Caused this Accident?

It’s not clear what caused this Metrolink train accident. Based on this news report, it appears that the car accident triggered the collision with the train. We do not know at this point if one of the drivers failed to yield right-of-way or ran a red light to crash into the other car. I trust officials are looking into how or why the initial crash occurred.

The victims of this train-car accident would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Fernando Valley personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and help determine whether there was any negligence or wrongdoing involved. A car accident attorney who has successfully handled Metrolink train accident cases will also look into whether the train operator was responsible in any way or whether a dangerous condition on that roadway or crossing caused or contributed to this train crash.
