Motorcycle Accident in Los Angeles Causes Injuries

A motorcycle accident in Los Angeles resulted in injuries for a police officer the afternoon of September 6, 2010. The Los Angeles Daily News reports that the officer’s cycle was struck from behind by another vehicle in the 6100 block of Sepulveda Boulevard in Van Nuys. The officer was thrown off his motorcycle and suffered injuries, but is expected to survive. Officials are looking into what caused the driver to rear-end the motorcycle.

It is indeed fortunate that the police officer in this case was not seriously injured. I wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Los Angeles Car Accidents

There were 667 deaths and 52,229 injuries involving car accidents in Los Angeles County, according to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 traffic accident statistics. In the city of Los Angeles, 268 people died and 25,588 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Car Accident Causes

Based on this news report, it is not clear how or why this car versus motorcycle accident occurred. There are several questions here. Was the driver of the vehicle under the influence? Was he or she distracted at the time? Was speed an issue? California Vehicle Code Section 22350 (Basic Speed Law) states: “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic and on surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.”

Liability Issues

Injured victims in such cases would be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to advise victims about how their car insurance policy might apply to an incident where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.

In your opinion, what are some of the biggest hazards faced by motorcyclists today?
