Motorcyclist Killed in Huntington Beach Car Accident

Juan Espejel, 25, was killed in a Huntington Beach car accident after a 1982 Chevrolet Silverado hit his Yamaha motorcycle. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal motorcycle accident occurred on Brookhurst Street near Adams Avenue in Huntington Beach, the afternoon of December 6, 2011. Officials say Espejel was riding south when the Silverado struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. It is not clear if the 20-year-old male driver of the Silverado will be cited for the crash. Authorities are requesting for information from witnesses to this collision. They can be reached at 714-536-5666.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Juan Espejel for their devastating loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Orange County Motorcycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), three people were killed and 61 were injured in Huntington Beach motorcycle accidents. During that same year, there were 17 fatalities and 735 injuries reported due to Orange County motorcycle accidents.

What Caused This Fatal Accident?

Based on this news report, officials have not determined the cause of the crash. There are a number of questions that remain here at this time. Was the driver of the pickup exceeding the speed limit or driving distracted? Did the motorist make an unsafe lane change without properly looking for the motorcycle? Was the driver of the Chevrolet under the influence, driving recklessly, or otherwise negligent? Was this a rear-end collision? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.

Liability Issues

If the driver of the Silverado is determined to have been at fault, he or she can be held liable for Juan Espejel’s wrongful death. In cases where negligence is involved, families of deceased car accident victims can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, and loss of companionship. Victims’ families in such cases would be well advised to contact an experienced Huntington Beach car accident lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
