A 7-year-old boy suffered severe head injuries in an Orange County car accident when the Honda Accord in which he was a passenger was struck by another vehicle at a street intersection. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the major injury car accident occurred at the intersection of Hazard Avenue and Purdy Street in Westminster the morning of March 4, 2011. Police say the Honda Accord was turning left when a Toyota Sequoia broadsided it.
The 7-year-old passenger in the Honda is in serious condition with head injuries. The female driver of the Sequoia sustained minor injuries in the crash. The Honda continued on to strike a Xterra that was at a stop sign, but no one was hurt in that vehicle. Officials are looking into which one of the vehicles had the right-of-way at the intersection.
My thoughts and prayers are with the young boy injured in this Orange County car accident. I wish him a complete and speedy recovery.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), four people were killed and 467 were injured in Westminster car accidents. During that same year, there were 152 fatalities and 13,414 injuries reported due to Orange County car accidents.
What Caused This Car Accident?
Based on this news report, it appears that one of the drivers may have failed to yield right-of-way at the intersection. Under California Vehicle Code Section 21801, drivers making a left hand turn “shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction.” Additionally, California Vehicle Code Section 21800 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle which has entered the intersection.” I trust officials are also looking into whether one of the drivers ran a red light, and also if impaired or distracted driving played a part in this injury car accident.
Fault and Liability
If the driver of the Honda caused this car accident, he or she could be held liable for the resulting injuries and damages. If the driver of the Toyota is determined to have been responsible for the accident, then she could be held civilly liable. Injured victims or their families in such cases would be well advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Orange County personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all facets of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held accountable.
