A woman was injured in an Orange County car accident, which officials say involved a drunk driver. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the DUI accident occurred at the intersection of West Chapman Avenue and Knott Street in Garden Grove the night of April 19, 2011. Officials say that the male driver of a pickup was speeding when he ran a red light, crashed into a second vehicle and then slammed into an abandoned building. Both the male driver of the pickup and the female driver of the other vehicle sustained injuries in the crash. The driver of the pickup truck was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.
My thoughts and prayers are with the injured victim of this alcohol-related accident. I wish the victim the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), four people were killed and 77 were injured in DUI collisions in Garden Grove. In Orange County as a whole, 62 deaths and 1,492 injuries were reported involving alcohol-related crashes during that same year.
Violation of Laws
Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the pickup truck violated several laws. Officials say that the man was driving under the influence, speeding and ran a red light at the intersection. Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs is against California law. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.”
Also, California Vehicle Code Section 21453 (a) states: “A driver facing a circular red signal shall stop at the limit line before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown.”
In such cases where negligence or wrongdoing is evident, injured victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, physical therapy and other related damages. Car accident victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Orange County personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that the negligent parties are held accountable.
