Pasadena Bus Versus Car Accident Injures Seven

Seven people suffered injuries in a Pasadena street intersection bus accident involving a Pasadena Area Rapid Transit System (ARTS) bus and a sedan, the Pasadena Star News reports. The bus-car accident occurred the morning of June 23, 2009 after the bus, which was traveling north on Raymond Avenue collided with a sedan, jumped the curb and slammed into a traffic light. The sedan had been heading east on Holly Street. All the seven people who were injured were bus passengers. Pasadena police officials believe one of the two vehicles ran a red light. The injuries were not major, but were characterized as “moderate.” Most involved back and neck injuries.

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 traffic accident statistics, there were 11 fatalities and 1,037 injuries involving car accidents in Pasadena. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 712 deaths and 56,475 injuries were reported in 2007 as a result of car accidents.

Running a red light is a serious traffic violation. California Vehicle Code Section 21453 (a) states: “A driver facing a circular red signal shall stop at the limit line before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, if none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown.”

In this particular Los Angeles County bus-car accident, it will be critical to find out who was at fault for the collision. Police officials are quite sure that the crash occurred because one of the drivers ran a red light. If the driver of the car ran the red light, then he could be held liable for the injuries caused to the bus passengers. If the bus driver ran the red light then he and his employer, the transit authority, could be held liable. Bus operators–whether they are public or private carriers–owe their passengers the highest “duty of care.” This means that they are responsible for transporting passengers safely to their destination.

The injured victims in this case would be well-advised to retain the services of experienced Los Angeles County personal injury attorneys, who will stay on top of the official investigation, identify the negligent parties and make sure the victims’ legal rights are protected here.
