Pedestrian Killed in Los Angeles Hit-And-Run Crash

A woman was fatally injured in a Los Angeles car accident, which officials report, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a news report in the Daily Breeze, the pedestrian accident occurred on Rosecrans Avenue, between Budlong and Normandie avenues, in Gardena, the night of August 19, 2011. The woman was crossing the street when a gray, four-door 2000-2001 Honda Civic or Accord struck her. The woman was transported to a local hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Witnesses say that the hit-and-run driver was a Latino male between 25 and 30 years old with short or shaved hair and a medium to heavy build. Officials also say that there were two passengers in the car. Anyone who witnessed the crash, or has information about the suspect or vehicle is asked call Gardena police at 310-217-6135.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the woman killed in this tragic hit-and-run car accident. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but 24 injuries reported involving pedestrian accidents in Gardena. During that same year, 179 fatalities and 4,918 injuries occurred due to Los Angeles County pedestrian accidents.

Based on this news report, the driver not only struck and critically injured the pedestrian, but also left her lying on the roadway without care or medical attention. This is an appalling and unconscionable act, which shows callous disregard for a fellow human being. Leaving the scene of an injury crash is also a serious crime. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Liability Issues

Families of hit-and-run victims would be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A skilled car accident attorney will also be able to inform victims’ families about how their own car insurance policy applies to an incident where the hit-and-run suspect is never apprehended, or, in a case where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.
