Pedestrian Killed In Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Crash

A woman was killed in a Los Angeles pedestrian accident after a vehicle struck her. According to a KABC news report, the fatal accident occurred at the intersection of Century Boulevard and Hoover Street the night of August 30, 2015. Police say the woman was walking within a crosswalk at the intersection when she was struck.

She was pinned under a parked Toyota Prius and emergency personnel had to lift the Prius to free the victim. She was transported to an area hospital where she died. The suspect vehicle left the scene of the crash without rendering any aid to the victim. Officials said the suspect vehicle is a blue SUV, possibly a Toyota 4Runner. The investigation is still ongoing.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family members and friends of this fatally injured hit-and-run victim. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2013 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 90 fatalities and 2,639 injuries reported as a result of pedestrian accidents in the city of Los Angeles. Countywide, 211 people died and 4,721 were injured due to pedestrian accidents during the same year.

Violation of Laws

Based on this news report, the driver may have violated more than one law. The article states that the vehicle struck a pedestrian who was walking in a marked crosswalk.

California Vehicle Code section 21950 states: “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.”

The motorist also left the scene of the crash without offering aid to the victim, which is a violation of California Vehicle Code 20001 (a).

Under this law, motorists must exchange pertinent information with other parties involved in the collision and most importantly, help the injured victim. This driver did none of the above, but fled leaving the critically injured victim lying in the roadway. Outrageous!
