Police Investigating Hit-and-Run Crash in Hawthorne

Police are investigating a hit-and-run crash in Hawthorne that left one man dead and another critically injured the night of April 13, 2014. According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, police say a car full of good Samaritans pulled over to help a driver who crashed into a parked car in the 12100 block of Prairie Avenue.

The driver of the crashed vehicle and three others were standing outside when another vehicle sped onto the street and hit them, killing one of those individuals. One person remained in critical condition and two others suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect fled on foot after the crash, but was later arrested. Police believe he may have been under the influence. The investigation is ongoing.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of the deceased crash victim. My thoughts and prayers are also with the good Samaritans who were injured in this crash.

Violation of Laws
Based on this news report, it appears that the driver who crashed into the group of people was not only under the influence and speeding, but also fled the scene of a fatal crash that he caused. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.” Also, California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Wrongful Death Action
In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased accident victims can file what is known as a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for damages including lost future income, medical expenses, funeral costs and loss of love and companionship. Injured victims can also seek compensation to cover medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, rehabilitation, pain and suffering and emotional distress. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will be able to help injured hit-and-run victims and families of deceased victims better understand their legal rights and options.
