Police Officer Injured in Motorcycle Accident

Deputy Bradley Gravely was seriously injured in a Placer County car accident when his FJR 1000 Yamaha motorcycle was struck by another vehicle. According to The Auburn Journal, the motorcycle accident occurred on Bell Road in Auburn the morning of February 23, 2011. The Placer County deputy was traveling westbound on Bell when Hugh Morrill, 83, who was driving a Subaru, attempted a left turn from a parking lot, ahead of the officer. Gravely was thrown approximately 50 feet in the accident and suffered major injuries. A female passenger in the Subaru was hospitalized for chest pains following the deployment of the airbags. An investigation is ongoing.

My thoughts and prayers are with Deputy Bradley Gravely following this injury accident. I wish him a complete and speedy recovery from his injuries.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), eight people were injured in Auburn motorcycle accidents. During that same year, Placer County motorcycle accidents claimed two lives and injured 110 people.

The Law Relating to Left Turns

Based on the news account, it appears that the driver of the Subaru made a dangerous turn into traffic from a parking lot. According to California Vehicle Code Section 21804 (a): “The driver of any vehicle about to enter or cross a highway from any public or private property, or from an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all traffic.” Vehicles entering traffic “shall continue to yield the right-of-way to that traffic until he or she can proceed with reasonable safety.”

Liability Issues

If the elderly driver is determined to have caused this major injury accident, then he could be held liable for the injuries and damages caused. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Victims would also be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced California personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable. The best personal injury law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive case evaluation to injured car accident victims and their families.
