Four Police Officers Injured in Long Beach Car Accident

Four undercover police officers were injured in a Long Beach car accident after the vehicle in which they were traveling hit a pickup truck at a street intersection. According to a news report in The Press-Telegram, the injury car accident occurred the night of November 29, 2010 at the intersection of Ocean and Long Beach boulevards. The four officers were travelling in a car that collided with a black pickup truck that was making a left turn. All four officers sustained non-life threatening injuries and were transported to an area hospital. An investigation is ongoing.

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured officers involved in this car accident. I wish them all a complete and speedy recovery from their injuries.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 27 people were killed and 1,881 were injured in Long Beach car accidents. During that same year, there were 667 fatalities and 52,229 injuries as a result of Los Angeles County car accidents.

What Caused This Intersection Car Accident?

Police are still investigating the accident to determine which driver was at-fault for the accident. While both vehicles had the green light here, it appears the pickup truck attempted a left turn in front the car. California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”

Fault and Liability

If the driver of the pickup is determined to have been at fault, he or she could be held liable for the injuries caused to the police officers. Injured victims in such cases could seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. An experienced Long Beach personal injury lawyer will be able to better advise victims about their legal rights and options.
