Santa Ana police traffic investigators are seeking the public’s help for information about a fatal car accident that occurred early morning on November 30, 2014.
According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, a 19-year-old man was driving alone in a 2007 Nissan Murano on Flower Street.
An unidentified man was driving a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser east on Dryer Road.
Officials say the two vehicles crashed at the intersection and the impact caused both vehicles to go off the roadway and strike a
traffic signal and a fence. The Chrysler’s driver died at the scene.
The driver of the Nissan was transported to a hospital for injuries. He is believed to have been driving under the influence of drugs at the time of the collision. Officials have not yet determined who ran the red light at the intersection.
Anyone who may have seen this collision is asked to contact traffic investigators at 714-245-8216.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family members and friends of the deceased crash victim. He will be in our thoughts and prayers.
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2012 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 12 fatalities and 159 injuries involving DUI collisions in the city of Santa Ana.
In Orange County as a whole, 56 people died and 1,346 were injured due to DUI crashes during the same year.
Laws and Liability Issues
Based on this news report, officials suspect that the driver of the Nissan was under the influence of drugs.
According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.”
A driver whose act of driving under the influence results in the death of another will likely face vehicular manslaughter charges under California Penal Code section 191.5 (a).
In such cases where negligence or wrongdoing was involved, families of deceased victims can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for damages such as medical and funeral costs, lost future income, pain and suffering and loss of love and companionship.
Injured DUI victims or their families would be well advised to contact a Santa Ana personal injury lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
