Injuries in Riverside Car Accident Involving Police Vehicle

A Cathedral City police officer and at least three other people were injured in a Riverside car accident after a police car crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of Ramon and Crossley in Palm Springs. KESQ reports that the accident occurred the evening of December 31, 2009, when a police car slammed into a Hyundai at the street intersection. An eyewitness told reporters that the officer struck the other car while attempting to catch up with another police car.

The witness said the officer actually ran the red light at the intersection and was traveling at a high rate of speed right before he struck the Hyundai. The police officer sustained a broken leg and the reserve officer who was riding with him suffered minor injuries. The people in the Hyundai escaped with cuts and bruises, officials said.

I’m relieved that this accident did not result in catastrophic injuries. I hope and pray that the injured victims recover quickly and completely.

Car Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were seven fatalities and 427 injuries involving car accidents in Palm Springs. Countywide, 279 deaths and 9,925 injuries were reported as a result of traffic accidents in 2007.

Accident Causes and Liability Issues

The eyewitness interviewed in the news report states that the officer was at fault because he basically ran a red light and crashed into the Hyundai. However, there are many facts we still do not know here. It’s not clear whether the officer was responding to an emergency. If so, we do not know if his emergency lights or sirens were on. It is important to determine whether the officer followed all of his department procedures and protocols. I’d also be curious to find out exactly what types of injuries the occupants of the Hyundai sustained.

If the police officer is found to be at fault, his employer – the police department – could be held liable because he was in a department vehicle and apparently on the job at the time of the accident. Please remember that any claim against a governmental entity in California must be filed within six months of the accident or injury.
