Riverside Car Accident Proves Fatal for Elderly Bicyclist

Vernon Slade, 74, was killed in a Riverside car accident after a Dodge Ram pickup truck hit his bicycle. According to The Press-Enterprise, the fatal bicycle accident occurred on Heacock Street in Moreno Valley during the early morning hours of October 2, 2011. The details regarding how the collision occurred have not yet been released. Slade died shortly after the crash. It is not clear at this time if the driver of the pickup will be cited for the fatal accident.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of Vernon Slade following this fatal bicycle accident. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

Riverside County Bicycle Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person was killed and 24 were injured in Moreno Valley bicycle accidents. During that same year, there were seven fatalities and 343 injuries reported due to Riverside County bicycle accidents.

What Caused This Fatal Accident?

It is unclear from this news account as to what led to the fatal car versus bicycle accident. There are more questions than answers here at this time. Did the bicyclist attempt to cross the road at a dangerous location? Did the driver veer into the bicyclist? Was the driver of the pickup truck distracted, intoxicated, speeding or negligent in any way? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway which may have caused or contributed to this crash? I trust officials are looking into these and other factors in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.

Fault and Liability

If the driver of the pickup is determined to have been at fault, he or she could be held liable for the bicyclist’s wrongful death. In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, the family of a deceased car accident victim can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, loss of companionship, and other related damages. Victims’ families would be well-advised to contact an experienced Riverside personal injury lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
