One person was killed and two others — 28-year-old Chris Vielow and 29-year-old Oliver Kohlbacher — were injured in a Riverside car accident after their Toyota Prius was rear-ended at a Coachella intersection, by a Ford pickup truck that was pulling a trailer. According to a news report in The Desert Sun, the fatal car crash occurred the afternoon of March 29, 2010 on the northbound 86 Expressway at Airport Boulevard, when Amber Line, 42, the driver of the pickup truck driver, rear-ended the Toyota, which was stopped at the intersection. A passenger in the Toyota died at the scene. Vielow and Kohlbacher sustained injuries, but the extent of their injuries is not clear. Line was treated for her minor injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the passenger who was killed in this horrific crash. Please keep them in your prayers. I also hope Vielow and Kohlbacher did not sustain any serious injuries and wish them both the very best for a quick and complete recovery.
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) there were seven fatalities and 68 injuries involving car accidents in Coachella. In Riverside County as a whole, car accidents claimed 220 lives and injured 8.561 people during the same year.
Causes and Liability Issues
If the details of this news report are accurate, it appears to me that the driver of the pickup truck, Line, may have been at fault here. The question is why did the crash occur. Why did this driver fail to see the Prius in time? Was the driver of the pickup impaired? Was she distracted, speeding or otherwise negligent? If Line is determined to have been responsible for the collision, then she could be held liable for the accident and injuries caused.
