A teenager and a toddler were seriously injured in a Riverside car accident after a reckless driver jumped a street curb and struck them. According to a KPSP News report, the injury crash occurred the night of April 11, 2010 when 23-year-old Cesar Adrian Munoz and another driver were driving recklessly in the 69400 block of El Canto Road in Cathedral City. The 17-year-old girl and a 2-year-old girl were hit by Munoz’s vehicle when he was driving in reverse.

Young Girls Sustain Major Injuries
Both the victims sustained critical injuries. One of the teenager’s legs was severed and the toddler sustained head and internal injuries. They are expected to survive, but remain in critical condition. Officials say Munoz was driving under the influence of marijuana and other drugs. He has been charged with felony DUI causing great bodily injury, reckless driving causing injury and driving without a valid license.
My heart goes out to the family of these young victims who are believed to be cousins. I can only imagine the emotional turmoil this family is now under. I hope neither of the victims has suffered any catastrophic injuries as a result of this crash. They will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers. I sincerely wish that both make a speedy and complete recovery.
DUI Law in California
Driving under the influence of alcohol or any type of drugs — be it recreational or prescription — is a serious crime under California law. California Vehicle Code section 23152 (a) states: “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.” Munoz was apparently detained by members of the victims’ family after he tried to flee the scene several times. If found guilty, I trust Munoz will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
The victims’ families in such cases would be well-advised to consult with an experienced Riverside personal injury lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and make sure that the victims’ rights are protected. In such cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, injured victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, hospitalization costs, long term care expenses and pain and suffering.
A knowledgeable injury lawyer will also advise victims about how their own car insurance policy applies to an accident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured. Remember, if you have uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage through your auto insurance, then, the other members of your household, including children, are covered under the policy, even if they are not named in the policy.
