Five Injured in Riverside Truck Accident

Dragos Tanase, 36, and Bora Nastic, 66, sustained major injuries in a Riverside car accident, which involved several vehicles. According to a news report in the Southwest Riverside News Network, the major injury accident occurred early morning on March 15 on the 10 Freeway in Desert Center.

California Highway Patrol officials say the accident happened when 55-year-old John Lang crashed his big-rig into the rear of a stopped 2007 Freightliner truck. That truck in turn hit another big rig which collided with a sedan. Lang sustained major injuries as did Tanase, the driver of the truck that was rear-ended, and, his passenger, Nastic. The driver of the third truck that was hit, 40-year-old Hector Castro, and the driver of the sedan, 33-year-old Rachel Douglas, both, sustained relatively minor injuries.

My heart goes out to everyone who was injured in this truck accident. I wish them all the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Riverside Accident Statistics

According to CHP’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 121 fatalities and 2,615 injuries reported involving car accidents in the unincorporated areas of Riverside. In Riverside County as a whole, 220 people died and 8,561 were injured due to car accidents during the same year.

Rear-End Accident

Based on this news report, it appears that the chain-reaction crash here was triggered by the initial rear-end collision between the two big rigs. Rear-end accidents are often caused by drivers following too close behind another vehicle or by distracted drivers. California Vehicle Code Section 21703 states: “The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicle and the traffic upon, and the condition of, the roadway.”

Fault and Liability

In this case, I trust officials are looking at whether Lang was under the influence, fatigued, speeding, inattentive or following the other vehicles too closely. If Lang is determined to have been at fault, he and his employer could be held liable for the injuries caused to the other victims of this accident. Injured victims in such cases would be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Riverside personal injury lawyer, who has successfully handled personal injury and wrongful death claims against trucking companies. The best personal injury law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive case evaluation to injured victims and their families.
