San Bernardino Car Accident Kills 12-year-old Bicyclist

Randy Vargas, 12, was killed in a Riverside car accident after he was struck by a pickup truck the evening of October 26, 2009. According to a news report in The Press Enterprise, Randy was hit by a white Toyota pickup truck while riding his bicycle along the 27400 block of Jarvis Street, between Perris and Lake Elsinore. California Highway Patrol officials said the boy was taken to a local hospital and later transferred to Loma Linda University Medical Center in San Bernardino County. Randy Vargas died the morning of October 27, San Bernardino Coroner’s officials said.

My heart goes out to the family of young Randy Vargas for their tragic and untimely loss. I offer my deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved Randy. His family will certainly be in my prayers.

Riverside Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), six injuries were reported in Perris as a result of bicycle accidents. In Riverside County as a whole, eight deaths and 325 injuries were reported as a result of serious bicycle accidents in 2007. Also, countywide, 279 people were killed and 9,925 were injured in car accidents during the same period.

This news report does not offer sufficient details about how or why this fatal car collision occurred. Where exactly was Vargas riding his bicycle? Whose fault was the accident? I trust investigators are looking into whether the driver of the pickup truck was intoxicated, distracted, speeding or negligent in some other way. If that was the case, then the driver of the pickup truck could be held liable for Randy Vargas’ fatal injuries.

Contacting an Experienced Personal Injury Attorney

In any such serious injury or fatal accident cases, the victims or their families would be well-advised to consult with an experienced California personal injury claim lawyer who will follow up with the official investigation and help determine whether there was any negligence or wrongdoing involved. If negligence or wrongdoing was involved, families of deceased car accident victims may be able to file wrongful death claims seeking compensation to cover medical/funeral costs and other related damages.

A skilled car accident attorney will also be able to determine whether there was a dangerous condition on the roadway which may have caused or contributed to this fatal accident. If that was the case, the governmental agency responsible for maintaining that roadway could be held liable. Please remember that any such claim against a California governmental agency must be properly filed within 180 days of the accident or injury.
