Yesenia Lopez, 36, was killed in a San Bernardino car accident that occurred the evening of February 22, 2010 after the vehicle she was driving was struck by another car. The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin reports Lopez was driving south on Foothill Boulevard near Laurel Avenue, in Fontana, when her silver 2002 Honda hit a 2009 Kia. Lopez was transported to a local hospital where she died.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Yesenia Lopez for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep this grieving family in your prayers.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 traffic accident statistics, there were 14 fatalities and 627 injuries involving car accidents in Fontana. In San Bernardino County as a whole, car accidents claimed 263 lives and injured 8,504 people during the same year.
This accident is typical of what is known as a broadside crash or a “side-impact collision.” The reason side impact crashes are so deadly is that the sides of vehicles offer less protection from the impact of a collision than the front or back of a vehicle. If the striking vehicle hits the other squarely on its side doors, occupants of the vehicle that is struck risk catastrophic injuries or even fatal injuries, as it happened with this accident.
Fault and Liability
This news report does not offer sufficient information about how exactly this street intersection collision occurred. There are more questions than answers here. Who was at fault in this case? Did Lopez or the other driver fail to yield right-of-way at the intersection? Did the other driver run a red light and crash into Lopez? Was the other driver under the influence, speeding, distracted, or negligent in any other way? I trust the results of the investigation will shed more light on how and why this fatal car accident occurred.
Victims’ families in such cases, would be well-advised to consult with an experienced San Bernardino car accident attorney, who will analyze all aspects of the crash and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable. Where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased car accident victims can also file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation to cover medical or funeral expenses, lost future earnings, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages.
