Gloria Lyn Ziegenmeyer-Hooker, 57, was killed in a San Bernardino car accident after the vehicle in which she was a passenger rolled over and crashed on the 15 Freeway, in Victorville. According to a news report in the Victorville Daily Press, the fatal accident occurred the morning of July 5, 2010.
California Highway Patrol officials say Jerry Wayne Hooker, 55, was driving a Ford F-250 Super Duty pickup north on the freeway, near Bear Valley Road, when the truck lost pressure in one tire. Hooker tried to pull over onto the center divider as the tire shredded and the vehicle rolled over. The couple was trapped in the vehicle. Ziegenmeyer-Hooker died at the scene. Her husband was airlifted to an area hospital with moderate injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
According to CHP’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 16 fatalities and 266 injuries involving car accidents in Victorville. In San Bernardino County as a whole, 263 people died and 8,504 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.
Based on this news report it is possible that a bad tire may have caused this tragic accident. It is not entirely clear, however, whether the accident occurred because of poor tire maintenance or because of a defective tire. The Hooker family has certainly suffered a tremendous blow due to this rollover crash. If I were a family member of the victims here, I would definitely want to know whether a defective tire led to this fatal accident.
Auto Product Liability Issues
Auto product defects, particularly tire defects, can seriously affect a driver’s ability to control the vehicle, as it did in this case. If this accident was the result of an auto product defect, then the auto maker or manufacturer of the defective product can be held liable for the wrongful death of Ziegenmeyer-Hooker. In such cases, families of deceased car accident victims would be able file a claim for compensation seeking medical and funeral expenses, lost future income, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages.
Victims’ families would be well-advised to consult an experienced San Bernardino personal injury lawyer, who has successfully handled auto products liability claims. It would also be in their best interests to preserve the vehicle in its crashed state, unaltered, so it can be carefully examined by an expert for auto product defects, malfunctions and other evidence. The best personal injury law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive claim evaluation for injured victims and their families.
What are the auto product defects you’ve experienced or hear about that most concern you? Do you feel safe in the vehicle that you drive?
