A bus driver and six passengers sustained injuries in a San Diego car accident after their bus collided with a pickup truck the afternoon of August 28, 2010. According to a news report in The San Diego Union-Tribune, the crash occurred on North Lake Wohlford Road near Valley Center Road. California Highway Patrol officials say the southbound pickup truck crossed into the opposing traffic lanes and struck the bus. The driver of the pickup truck was uninjured. The bus driver and the injured passengers were transported by ambulance to a local hospital. Some of the bus passengers sustained neck and back injuries. An investigation is ongoing.
I’m relieved to hear that all seven victims in this crash are expected to survive. I wish them the very best for a swift and complete recovery. They will definitely be in my prayers.
San Diego Car Accidents
There were 81 fatalities and 6,123 injuries involving car accidents in the city of San Diego, according to CHP’s 2008 traffic accident statistics. In San Diego County as a whole, 246 people died and 13,527 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.
Based on this news report, it appears that the driver may have swerved into the wrong lane on a straight stretch of road because he was distracted by a cell phone. Officials do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved. It is against California law to text or use a handheld cell phone while driving. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23123 (a): “A person shall not drive a motor vehicle while using a wireless telephone unless that telephone is specifically designed and configured to allow hands-free listening and talking, and is used in that manner while driving.”
In such cases where negligence may be involved, injured victims can seek compensation from the at-fault parties for medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, physical therapy and other related damages. Victims or their families would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Diego personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to advise victims about how their own car insurance policy applies to an incident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
