San Diego Motorcycle Accident

San Diego Motorcycle Crash Kills Man

Michael Anthony Freitas, 66, of Riverside was killed in a San Diego motorcycle accident the afternoon of March 12, 2009, according to a Channel 6 news report. The fatal motorcycle versus auto collision occurred on Route 163 when Freitas was riding south on the highway near Kearny Villa Road. He was struck by a pickup truck whose driver swerved to avoid hitting a truck that had made a sudden lane change. Freitas was thrown off his motorcycle into a northbound lane where he was struck by another vehicle. He was taken to a local hospital where he died of his injuries.

California Highway Patrol officials say this fatal motorcycle accident in San Diego occurred because the driver of the pickup truck swerved to avoid another vehicle in front that had made a sudden lane change. The pickup also struck another sport utility vehicle that rolled over and came to rest on its roof. It is not clear whether anyone in the SUV was injured.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Michael Anthony Freitas for their sudden and tragic loss. Please keep them in your prayers.

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2006 Statewide Integrated Traffic Reporting System, there were 12 deaths and 332 injuries reported as a result of motorcycle accidents in San Diego. In San Diego County as a whole, 39 fatalities and 1,038 injuries reportedly occurred as a result of motorcycle accidents during that same period.

If this news report is accurate, it seems to me that the driver who made the unsafe lane change in front of the pickup truck was at fault for this accident. I trust the CHP investigation will look into whether that driver was speeding, driving recklessly and if he or she was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the accident.

Freitas’ family would be well-served to consult a reputed California motorcycle accident lawyer, who will examine the facts of this case, identify the negligent parties and hold them accountable for this accident. The best California personal injury lawyers always provide the victims and their families a comprehensive initial consultation at no charge or obligation.
