One person was fatally injured in a San Francisco car accident involving several vehicles, CBS News reports. The fatal crash occurred the morning of April 27, 2010 at the intersection of River Road and Somers Street in Sonoma County. California Highway Patrol officials said a Nissan Sentra was stopped at the intersection and was waiting to turn left. The Nissan was then rear-ended by a Toyota Tercel and pushed into eastbound traffic. An approaching Lexus collided with the Nissan, killing its passenger.
The driver of the Nissan ran from the crash scene, but officials found him a short distance away with major head trauma. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Two people in the Lexus sustained minor injuries while the driver of the Tercel was uninjured. Officials say it is not clear why the driver of the Sentra ran from the scene as he was not at fault.
My heart goes out to the family and friends of the deceased victim for their devastating loss. I also hope the driver of the Nissan as well as the two other injured victims in the Lexus make a speedy and complete recovery. They will be in my thoughts and prayers.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), in Sonoma County as a whole, car accidents claimed 36 lives and injured 1,988 people. During the same year, there were 21 fatalities and 721 injuries as a result of car accidents in the unincorporated areas of Sonoma County.
Causes and Liability Issues
Based on this news report, it is not clear exactly what caused the driver of the Tercel to rear-end the Nissan. There are several questions here. Was the driver of the Toyota under the influence? Was he or she distracted, speeding or driving recklessly at the time? I trust investigators are looking into what exactly caused the driver to crash into the Sentra.
If the driver of the Tercel is determined to have been at fault, then he or she could be held liable for the accident, the resulting injuries and wrongful death. Injured victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of earnings and other damages while family members of deceased accident victims can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for damages including funeral expenses. An experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer, in such cases, will be able to advise victims and their families about their legal rights and options. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer should also determine how the victim’s car insurance policy applies to an accident where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.
