Three Injured in San Francisco Car Accidents Involving Suspected Drunk Driver

Three people were injured in five car accidents, which officials say, was caused by a suspected drunk driver. Bay City News reports that the driver, 23-year-old Cainan Schierholtz, caused several collisions that involved a bicyclist, pedestrian and a motorist. In each instance, police say, Schierholtz left the scene of the crash. He was booked on suspicion of DUI causing injury, hit-and-run and driving unlicensed. The bicyclist, pedestrian and a motorist whose SUV was struck by Schierholtz, were all injured. However, all the victims are expected to survive.

I’m relieved to hear that none of the victims sustained major injuries in this horrific crash. I pray that they all recover quickly and completely from their injuries.

Hit-and-Run Statistics

According to the California Highway Patrol’s traffic accident statistics, there were 17,158 hit-and-run collisions that resulted in fatalities or injuries in California in 2008. A majority of these car accidents involved injuries. There were 247 deaths in 2008 involving hit-and-run collisions statewide.

Laws and Liability Issues

Driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs is a serious crime under California Vehicle Code section 23152 (a). In this case, if the details in the news report are accurate, Schierholtz also left the scene of the crash, which is a serious violation of the law. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Accident victims in such cases can seek compensation from the at-fault driver to cover medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation, physical therapy and other related damages. An experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer can advise injured victims about how their own car insurance policy might apply in a hit-and-run case or in a situation where the at-fault driver may be uninsured or underinsured.
