Santa Ana Intersection Accident Injured Four

A 9-year-old boy, a 5-year-old boy and two women suffered injuries in a Santa Ana rollover accident on October 19, 2008, The Orange County Register reports. The crash occurred at the intersection of Hazard Avenue and Newhope Street when a Jeep and a silver Nissan Altima collided. The 9-year-old boy was ejected from the Jeep, which rolled over on its side.

It’s a relief that these children escaped with non-life threatening injuries in what could have ended up a lot worse. I offer my best wishes to both the young children and the women who were injured in this 10/19/08 accident.

In Santa Ana, there were a total of 22 fatalities in 2006 resulting from traffic collisions and 1,569 auto accident related injuries, according to California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Reporting System. In Orange County as a whole, there were 199 traffic accident deaths and 14,981 injuries during the same period.

Hazard Avenue and Newhope Street in Santa Ana are both two lanes in each direction. There are overhead traffic lights controlling the intersection of the two streets. Rosita Park is at the southwest corner of the intersection. There are also left turn pockets in each direction. I’d bet one of the drivers ran a red light and caused this accident.

We all know that running a red light is a serious traffic violation. There are various California Vehicle Code sections that are part of what we commonly refer to as “rules of the road.” These code sections address motorists’ behavior at intersections, especially those controlled by traffic signals. California Vehicle Code Section 21453 (a) states that a driver facing a circular red signal “shall stop at the limit line before entering the crosswalk on the near side of the intersection or, If none, then before entering the intersection, and shall remain stopped until an indication to proceed is shown.”

The injured victims would be well-advised to consult with an Orange County auto accident attorney who will look into whether the other driver was negligent in any way. The negligent party can be held financially liable for causing the accident and injuries. A skilled personal injury lawyer would also investigate the Santa Ana street intersection carefully to examine if there was a hazardous condition on that roadway. If there was a dangerous condition, then the city of Santa Ana could face liability. Please remember that any claim against a government agency must be properly filed within six months of the accident.
