Sherman Oaks Victims Saved By Helpful Witnesses

November 11, 2012–Sherman Oaks, California-Two helpful passers-by saved a drunk driver from a burning car on the 405 Freeway near Sherman Oaks on Sunday, according to ABC News. The accident occurred near the 101 Freeway about 3:30 Sunday morning when a driver lost control and flipped his car after crossing all four lanes of traffic and hitting a divider. The car bounced over the divider and burst into flames in the southbound lanes of the 405. The driver was trapped inside the car until two witnesses stopped, found him unconscious, and used a pocket knife to cut his seat belt free. The witnesses were able to drag the man from the car before he was seriously injured or killed.

After being transported to a local hospital, the driver was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.
My sincere wishes go out for a speedy recovery to the victim in this case, and my congratulations to the two men who helped save him from death or serious injury by risking themselves to come to his rescue.

Roll-Over Accidents Common in Los Angeles and Surrounding Areas
High numbers of roll-over accidents have been linked to certain types of vehicles and to high rates of speed. SUVs and light trucks are over-represented in rollover crashes because they have a very different center of gravity than lower-to-the-ground sedans and are more likely to flip in an accident. However, as this accident shows, a sedan or sports coupe can certainly flip if it is traveling at a high rate of speed and hits an obstruction such as a retaining wall.

Roll-overs account for about twenty percent of all fatal crashes and are most likely to be a single-vehicle accident, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s report on rollover accidents.

Who Has Liability In A Single-Car Accident?

In many cases, a single-car accident does not include issues of liability because the driver is responsible for his or her own injuries. However, there are circumstances in which a single-car accident can involve liability. For example, in the case of a drunk driver, if he or she crashes and it can be shown that a bartender knowingly served the driver alcohol after he or she was visibly intoxicated, the bartender may have liability for the crash. A California car accident attorney can help identify liability issues and help the victims recover compensation in a car accident case.
