Skateboarder Killed in Placentia Car Accident

Logan Wells, 16, was killed in a Placentia car accident after a vehicle struck him when he was riding his skateboard.

According to a KABC news report, the fatal accident occurred near the intersection of Bastanchury Road and Secretariat Way early morning on March 24, 2014.

Police say Wells was riding his skateboard when a Kia Sorento minivan struck him. The driver pulled over and called 911.

Wells was rushed to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A sheriff’s official said
he was not wearing his helmet at the time of the collision. The 61-year-old driver was not cited or arrested pending an official investigation.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Logan Wells, who was apparently an avid skateboarder, promising cinematographer and student at El Dorado High School in Placentia.

Please keep his loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2011 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but 16 injuries reported as a result of pedestrian accidents in the city of Placentia.

In Orange County as a whole, 38 people died and 773 were injured due to pedestrian accidents during the same year.

What Caused This Fatal Crash?

Based on this news report, it is unclear as to how or why this crash occurred. What we do know is that it happened during the early morning hours, when it was still dark outside.

There are several unanswered questions here.

Was Wells in a crosswalk at the intersection when the minivan hit him?

Was the driver of the minivan impaired, inattentive, distracted or fatigued at the time?

Was the intersection properly lit? Was there a dangerous condition on the roadway that may have caused or contributed to the accident?

I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here and why.

Accident Liability Issues

If the driver in this case is determined to have been at fault, he could be held liable for the victim’s wrongful death.

In such cases, families of deceased victims can seek compensation for damages including medical and funeral costs, lost future income and loss of love and companionship.

Knowledgeable Orange County wrongful death lawyers will also be able to determine whether a dangerous condition on the roadway contributed to this accident.

If that was the case, the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway can also be held liable.

Please remember that any personal injury or wrongful death claim against a governmental entity must be filed within 180 days of the incident.
