Speed a Factor in San Pedro Car Accident

Five people were injured in a Los Angeles car accident, which officials report, involved two vehicles traveling at a high rate of speed, the night of November 28, 2011. According to a news report in The Daily Breeze, the injury accident occurred on the westbound Vincent Thomas Bridge in San Pedro. Officials say that two vehicles were traveling at over 100 miles per hour before they crashed into a third vehicle. Of the five victims injured here, one has been listed in critical condition. The other four victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries. It is not clear if the speeding drivers will be cited or arrested in connection with this major injury collision.

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured victims of this Los Angeles accident. I wish them all a complete and speedy recovery.

Los Angeles Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 227 people were killed and 25,043 were injured in Los Angeles car accidents. Countywide, 554 fatalities and 50,817 injuries occurred involving car accidents, during that same year.

High Speed Collisions

Based on this news report, officials believe two of the three vehicles involved in the crash were traveling at a high rate of speed. I trust officials are looking into whether the vehicles were street racing. California Vehicle Code Section 23109 (a) states: “A person shall not engage in a motor vehicle speed contest on a highway.” In addition, according to California Vehicle Code Section 22350 (Basic Speed Law): “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.”

Liability Issues

In such cases, negligent drivers can be held liable for the injuries and damages they cause. Injured victims of car accidents would be well advised to speak with an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. Victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. The best personal injury law firms will always offer a free consultation and comprehensive case evaluation to injured victims and their families.
