Andrew Kim, 22, was killed in a Tustin car accident, which officials say, may have been caused by excessive speed. According to a news report in the Orange County Register, the fatal crash occurred early morning on March 10. Firefighters responded to reports of a Ford Mustang striking a tree on Jamboree Road just north of Patriot Way. The force of the crash severed the vehicle in half and caused the engine compartment to catch fire. Kim, who was the sole occupant of the car was dead by the time crews arrived to put out the fire, officials said.
An off-duty emergency dispatcher was the first motorist to come across the gruesome scene, but it was too late to help the man. It is unclear as to which direction Kim was traveling in when his vehicle crashed. Officials are also unable to say how fast the vehicle was going. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. But Tustin police believe excessive speed played a role. Investigators are asking anyone with information about the crash to come forward and contact Tustin police at 714-573-3218.
We offer our deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Andrew Kim for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2014 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but 403 injuries reported as a result of car accidents in the city of Tustin. In Orange County as a whole, 165 people died and 13,736 were injured due to car accidents during the same year. Also, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding killed 10,111 people, accounting for more than a quarter (27 percent) of all traffic accident fatalities that year.
Speeding is certainly an aggressive driving behavior. There are several reasons why people may speed. Traffic congestion is one of them. Frustrated drivers may respond by using aggressive driving behaviors such as speeding or changing lanes frequently. Some people resort to excessive speed when they are running late. Others speed because they have little regard for the law.
However, in accident cases, it is important to see the totality of the picture. It is critical to look into a number of factors including whether other vehicles were involved or if there was a vehicle defect or mechanical malfunction that may have caused or contributed to the incident. An experienced Orange County car accident lawyer will be able to help injured victims or families of deceased victims understand their legal rights and options.
