Student Injured in Anaheim Car Accident

A male student was injured in an Anaheim car accident after a pickup truck hit him as he crossed the street. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the pedestrian accident occurred at Water and Citron streets in Anaheim, the morning of October 6, 2011. Officials say the 17-year-old driver of a Chevy Silverado pickup truck may have run a stop sign before striking the victim. The pedestrian was transported to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. It is unclear if the male driver will be cited for the crash.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Anaheim High School student injured in this crash. I wish him the very best for a complete and speedy recovery.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), eight people were killed and 101 were injured in Anaheim pedestrian accidents. During that same year, 41 fatalities and 864 injuries occurred due to Orange County pedestrian accidents.

Failure to Yield

The report states that the driver may have been dealing with limited visibility issues because of the position of the sun and the dew on the windshield. Officials have also said that the driver may have run a stop sign before striking the victim. California Vehicle Code Section 21802 requires drivers to come to a complete stop at a stop sign and proceed with caution. California Vehicle Code Section 21950 states: “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.”

Fault and Liability

I trust officials are looking into what caused the young driver to strike the victim. If he is determined to have been at fault, the driver can be held civilly liable for the victim’s injuries and damages. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, lost wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Car accident victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Anaheim personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected
