Police have released video footage and have reached out to the public for help in tracking down the driver of an SUV who struck and critically wounded a 35-year-old female tourist visiting Los Angeles from Colombia. According to a KTLA news report, the woman was hospitalized in critical condition after the crash, which occurred the night of Jan. 6. Officials released the surveillance video on Jan. 10 seeking the public’s help in identifying the hit-and-run driver.
Major Head Injuries Sustained
The victim and her boyfriend, both from Colombia, were crossing Whittier Boulevard in Boyle Heights in a marked crosswalk when an SUV that was making a left turn from Lorena Street onto Whittier Boulevard struck the pedestrian. Paramedics took the woman to a hospital with severe head injuries.
She was listed in critical condition. The woman’s boyfriend was not struck. Police described the vehicle as a dark-colored SUV, possibly a Ford Explorer, which was last seen heading north on Lorena Street and getting onto the eastbound 60 Freeway. Anyone with information is asked to contact LAPD’s Central Traffic Division at 213-833-3713. The investigation is ongoing.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured victim of this collision. We wish her the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Justice for Hit-and-Run Victims
Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the vehicle struck the victim who was walking in a marked crosswalk and then fled the scene of the crash. Under California Vehicle Code Section 21950 (a), motorists are required to come to a complete stop at a marked crosswalk and yield the right of way to pedestrians. Leaving the scene of an injury car accident is a felony crime under the law. Motorists are required to stop right away, remain at the scene of the accident, exchange pertinent information and most importantly, render aid to the injured victim.
In such cases, victims are devastated physically, emotionally and financially. They are saddled with hospitalization and a myriad of other medical costs in addition to not having an income as they recovering from their injuries. Victims would be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles hit and run lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
