Teenager in Critical Condition after Anaheim Hit-and-Run Crash

A 15-year-old boy, identified as Ramiro Macias, was critically injured in a bicycle accident after he was struck by a minivan while riding his bike. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the teen was riding his bike near Brookhurst Street and Ball Road the night of September 18, 2016. Witnesses told police that the van, a gray Dodge Caravan, was driving erratically, swerved and struck the bicyclist.

They also told police that the driver failed to stop and continued driving. The boy was riding his bike south on Brookhurst in the bike lane. The front of the minivan will have damage consistent with hitting a bicycle, officials said. Anyone with information is asked to contact Anaheim police at 714-765-1900.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Ramiro Macias and his family as they go through these very difficult times. We wish him the very best for a quick and complete recovery.

Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2013 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one fatality and 133 injuries were reported in the city of Anaheim as a result of bicycle accidents. In Orange County as a whole, nine people died and 1,309 were injured due to bicycle accidents during the same year.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of minivan was operating erratically. Witnesses say he swerved and struck the boy who was riding his bike in a bike lane. It’s not clear at this point whether the driver was under the influence, distracted or inattentive at the time. By these accounts, the driver of the minivan struck, severely injured the boy and then fled the scene without rendering aid. Leaving a crash scene under such circumstances is a felony crime under California law, regardless of who was at fault for the accident.

Holding Wrongdoers Accountable

Injured victims of hit-and-run accidents are often saddled with expenses and other severe financial burdens while not having anyone to hold accountable for their losses. In such cases, an experienced Anaheim car accident lawyer can help victims and families understand how their own auto insurance policies might apply to a hit-and-run crash where the driver hasn’t been apprehended. In some cases, a dangerous roadway condition may also have caused or contributed to the incident. In these circumstances, the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway can also be held liable.
