A 17-year-old Stanton boy was killed in an Anaheim car accident after being struck by a vehicle, the night of April 24, 2012. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal car accident occurred in the 2800 block of West Cerritos Avenue near Magnolia Avenue. The teen was transported to UCI Medical Center in Orange where he was later pronounced dead.
Anaheim police said the boy and a man had been pushing a Honda Civic in the westbound number two lane on West Cerritos while a woman steered. They were apparently trying to move the car in preparation for street-sweeping day. As they were pushing the car, a Honda Ridgeline pickup truck rear-ended the Civic and the boy. The man was able to jump out of the way. The force of the collision pushed the Civic into a parked vehicle. The woman at the steering wheel suffered critical head injuries. The boy died from his injuries. The driver of the truck remained at the scene and has not been cited or arrested pending an official investigation.
I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of this teenager who was tragically killed. My heart also goes out to the woman who was critically injured. Please keep these victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 23 fatalities and 1,970 injuries occurred involving Anaheim car accidents. During the same year, 141 people died and 13,373 were injured in Orange County car accidents.
Causes and Compensation Issues
Based on the serious injuries, it appears that the driver of the Ridgeline rear-ended the car with tremendous force. It is not clear if the driver of the Ridgeline was under the influence, speeding, fatigued, distracted or otherwise negligent at the time. It is also not clear as to why that driver failed to see the teen and the other man pushing the car. I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred and why.
If the driver of the pickup is determined to have been at fault, then, he or she can be held liable for the injuries, damages and losses here. Injured victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, lost earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. The family of a deceased victim can file a wrongful death claim seeking damages. An experienced Anaheim personal injury lawyer will be able to advise victims or their families in such cases about their legal rights and options.
