Ten Injured in Orange County Car Accident

Ten people were injured in an Orange County car accident involving two vehicles, the afternoon of September 5, 2011. According to The Orange County Register, the serious injury accident occurred at the intersection of Santiago Canyon and Jamboree roads in Orange. Police say a Toyota van was turning left at the intersection when it collided with a Volkswagen sedan. The impact of the collision caused the van to flip over. Eight of the victims suffered moderate injuries while two were critically injured. The victims included four children. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident.

My thoughts and prayers are with the many injured victims of this terrible Orange County car accident. I wish them all a complete and quick recovery from their injuries.

Orange County Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), six people were killed and 725 injured in Orange car accidents. During that same year, Orange County car accidents claimed 141 lives and injured 13,373 people.

Possible Right-of-Way Issues

It is unclear from this report as to what caused this devastating car accident. The intersection where this accident took place is monitored by traffic lights. It appears that one of the vehicles, the van, was making a left turn at the intersection. However, it is unclear if the driver of the van failed to yield the right-of-way to the oncoming sedan.

California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”

Liability Issues

If the driver of the Toyota van is determined to have been negligent, he or she could be held liable for injuries and damages caused. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for damages including all medical expenses, loss of wages, hospitalization and rehabilitation costs. Victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Orange County personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
