Three women were hospitalized with injuries after a Los Angeles County car accident when their car left the freeway and went into the San Gabriel Riverbed. According to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the injury crash occurred the afternoon of May 23, 2012 in the southbound lanes of the 605 Freeway near Ramona Boulevard in Irwindale.
California Highway Patrol officials say one of the women was driving the Honda sedan in the number three lane. The driver tried to suddenly take an exit and lost control of the car. The vehicle veered to the right side of the roadway and rolled, coming to a stop on its roof about 75 feet down into the riverbed. One of the passengers was ejected. All three woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation is ongoing.
My thoughts and prayers are with the three injured women. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery from their injuries.
Car Accident Statistics
According to CHP’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), Irwindale car accidents caused four fatalities and injured 186 people. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 554 people died and 50,817 were injured due to car accidents, during the same year.
What Caused the Crash?
Based on this news article, the driver of the Honda swerved after she attempted to exit the freeway. It is not clear if she was speeding at the time, and whether that had caused her to lose control of the vehicle. California Vehicle Code Section 22350 (Basic Speed Law) states: “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic and on surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.”
If the driver is determined to have been at fault here, she can be held liable for the injuries caused to her passengers. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Car accident victims would be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable.
