At least two people were seriously injured in a Torrance car accident after a car went through a bakery storefront. According to a news report in the Daily Breeze, the injury collision occurred the afternoon of June 18, 2010 at J.J. Bakery in the 2300 block of Crenshaw Boulevard. A woman who was parking her Mercedes-Benz in front of the bakery, told officials she hit the gas instead of the brake and went through the front door. A man standing near the cash register was pinned against the bakery’s cooler while the cashier was pinned between the counter and a back wall. Both victims suffered broken bones and were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
It is indeed fortunate that more people were not involved in this crash. I hope the two injured victims did not sustain major injuries and pray for their speedy and complete recovery.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were nine fatalities and 480 injuries involving car accidents in Torrance. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 667 deaths and 52,229 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents during the same year.
Based on this news report, it is not quite clear what caused the driver of the Mercedes to plow into the bakery. Obviously, she hit the gas instead of the brake. I trust officials are looking into how that happened. Was she disoriented somehow? Was the woman under the influence, distracted, or otherwise negligent?
Fault and Liability
If the driver of the Mercedes is determined to have been at fault, she could be held liable for the accident and the injuries. In such cases injured victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, surgeries, rehabilitation, physical therapy and other related damages.
In such cases, injured victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all facets of the accident and make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable for their actions. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to advise victims how their car insurance policy might apply to an accident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
