Two Killed in San Bernardino Car Accident

Abdul Matin Formoli, 41, and Brian Griffin Lynn, 62, were both killed in a San Bernardino car accident that involved a head-on collision. According to a news report in The San Bernardino County Sun, the fatal car accident occurred the afternoon of August 11, 2011 on Highway 247, near Barstow. Officials say the northbound 2004 Toyota driven by Formoli drifted into the southbound traffic lane, striking a Ford F-150 pickup truck driven by Lynn. Formoli died at the scene. Lynn was transported to an area hospital where he died. Lynn’s wife, who was a passenger in the pickup truck, was also injured, but her condition is not known.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members and friends of Brian Griffin Lynn and Abdul Matin Formoli for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. My heart also goes out to Lynn’s wife who was injured. I wish her the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were three fatalities and 67 injuries reported in Barstow involving car accidents. In San Bernardino County as a whole, 223 people died and 7,870 were injured due to car accidents, during the same year.

What Caused This Head-On Crash?

Based on this news report, the driver of the Toyota, Formoli, entered opposing lanes of traffic and struck Lynn’s pickup truck head-on. California Vehicle Code Section 21651 (a): “Whenever a highway has been divided into two or more roadways by means of intermittent barriers or by means of a dividing section of not less than two feet in width, either unpaved or delineated by curbs, double-parallel lines, or other markings on the roadway, it is unlawful…to drive any vehicle over, upon, or across the dividing section.”

It is not clear what caused Formoli to drift into oncoming traffic. Was he under the influence at the time? Was he fatigued or distracted? Was there some type of vehicle defect or mechanical malfunction in his car? Did he lose control of his vehicle as a result of speeding? I trust these are some of the questions investigators are asking in order to determine the cause of this horrific crash.

Victims’ Claim for Compensation

If Formoli is determined to have been negligent here, then, Lynn’s family can file a wrongful death claim and seek compensation from his estate and/or liability insurance. Damages that may be covered include, but are not limited to medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, benefits, and loss of love and companionship. Victims’ families in such cases would be well-advised to contact an experienced San Bernardino personal injury lawyer who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that their legal rights are protected.

I am so sorry for the lost of Matin and Brian. All I need to say is I knew Matin very well. He was a good friend and a great father. I am about 99% sure that he fall a sleep on the wheel. He was on his way back from Twenty-nine palms US Maine base. He went to work as a roll-player to help his country here and back home. He must have been tired and fall a sleep on the way back. I’ve been on the same road many times and almost every time I felt like I was about to fall a sleep. This was his first time going, and he should have called me and we could have gone together. The reason I didn’t go was because I didn’t want to drive for 9 hours alone. I’ve drove before and it’s a boring drive. Again I am very sad and sorry for both families. My regards and prayers goes to both families for their lost. I wish I’ve known that he was going, so I could have gone with him and this might not have happened. Again only GOD knows and he is the one who knows who is going when and how! Nothing we human can do. All we can do is pray. Matin left behind a wife a 7 yrs old little girl and just a year old son. Love you Matin, wish I could spend more time with you.
