Two Killed in Los Angeles Car Accident Involving Big Rig

By

Otis Hall Jr. and Sharon Higgins, both 20, were killed in a Los Angeles car accident involving a big rig, a Lexus and a Ford Mustang. According to a news report in the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, the fatal truck accident occurred on the 60 Freeway, near Garey Avenue, in Pomona, early morning on May 16, 2011. After being involved in an initial collision, the drivers of the Mustang and the Lexus pulled their vehicles onto the shoulder. Officials say both Hall and Higgins were standing in the shoulder of the highway outside their respective vehicles, when a large truck veered and struck them and the parked vehicles. Both Hall and Higgins died at the scene. The truck driver was transported to a local hospital with unknown injuries. An investigation is ongoing.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Otis Hall Jr. and Sharon Higgins for their tragic, sudden and devastating losses. Please keep these grieving families in your thoughts and prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), six people were killed and 717 were injured in Pomona car accidents. During that same year, there were 667 fatalities and 52,229 injuries reported due to Los Angeles County car accidents.

What Caused This Fatal Truck Accident?

It appears from the report that the victims of this truck accident did the right thing by getting their vehicles onto the shoulder of the road. Investigators will have to determine why the truck driver was unable to avoid the collision. Was the truck driver speeding or driving distracted? Was the trucker fatigued, intoxicated or impaired at the time? Did the truck driver suffer a medical condition? I trust officials are also looking into what caused the initial accident between the Lexus and Mustang.

Liability Issues

If the truck driver is determined to have been at fault in this case, then, the driver and his or her employer could be held liable for the wrongful deaths of the two victims. The family of a deceased victim in such cases can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for medical and funeral expenses, lost future income, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages. Car accident victims’ families would be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will better explain their legal rights and options.
