Utility Trailer Kills Woman in Palm Springs

Just when the topic had started to die down, another horrific product liability accident hits the Internet. A woman was killed on Wednesday morning when a trailer detached from a truck and hit her car on Indian Canyon Drive in Palm Springs, police said. The area of Indian Canyon Drive from Tramview Road to just south of Interstate 10 was closed for a majority of the day.

According to Palm Springs police Sgt. Paul Abshire, the woman was driving a Nissan sedan north on Indian Canyon Drive and an electrical truck was heading south pulling a flatbed trailer when the trailer detached and collided with the Nissan. The woman was killed by the time officers arrived. A man was driving the truck, heading to a job. His identity and name of the electrical company as well as the victim were not immediately released. There is no indication of speed, alcohol or drugs being involved, Abshire said.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victim’s family during this difficult time. My condolences to family and friends of the woman killed in this tragic truck accident.

A Cause worth Fighting For

Due to the limited amount of information provided, it is difficult to determine the exact cause of this truck accident. Why did the trailer detach from the electrical truck? Was the hitch unable to support its weight? Was the driver of the truck driving erratically? Was the condition of the roadway a factor? Any and all of these questions could be the key to finding out why an innocent woman died, and how we can help prevent these types of accidents in the future.

Utility trailer wrongful death accidents have become so common that some are devoting their lives to prevent future occurrences. Ron Melancon is not satisfied with the lack of protection for motorists and is fighting back with his website With more and more utility trailer accidents resulting in catastrophic injury and death, his audience is becoming more receptive and his words more powerful.

“The issue of trailer safety is not very complex,” Melancon says. “The solution is readily available right now. Every loose trailer accident, every death caused by trailers that separate while driving, is preventable now.”

Through his research, Ron found that many of these deaths and injuries are caused by defective products and safety chains connecting the trailer to the truck. He has been pushing to urge legislators to require that a suitable strength safety chain or similar reliable device always accompany a trailer being pulled by a car or truck, even if the trailer weighs less than 3,000 pounds.
