Jose Antonio Mora Avelar, 48, was killed in a Ventura car accident involving three dump trucks and six other vehicles. According to a news report in The Ventura County Star, the fatal truck accident occurred on northbound Highway 101 near Camarillo Springs Road, the morning of June 15, 2011. The victim’s dump truck crashed into another dump truck driven by Tigran Tagaryn 38, at a high rate of speed. The second truck overturned and crashed into multiple other vehicles. A third dump truck, driven by Arthur Cohan, 60, also crashed into by Tagaryn’s overturned truck.
Avelar was killed in the crash from blunt force trauma. Tagaryn sustained lacerations and neck and back pain. Cohan sustained minor injuries. Several other vehicles were damaged but no other victims were hospitalized following the crash.
My heartfelt condolences go out to the friends and family of Jose Antonio Mora Avelar following this tragic accident. My thoughts and prayers are also with the many injured victims of this truck accident.
Car Accident Statistics
According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 21 people were killed and 632 were injured due to car accidents in the unincorporated areas of Ventura County. During that same year, 63 fatalities and 3,785 injuries occurred as a result of Ventura County car accidents.
What Caused This Fatal Crash?
There are a number of unanswered questions here. Were any of the dump truck drivers operating recklessly at the time of the crash? Did speed play a part in this fatal injury crash? Were any of the drivers driving distracted? Did a mechanical malfunction in one of the trucks lead to the crash? Was one of the trucks overloaded? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine what occurred here and why.
California Vehicle Code Section 22350 (Basic Speed Law) states: “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic and on surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.”
If one of the trucks had lost its brakes or malfunctioned because of poor maintenance, the driver and his employer, the trucking firm, can be held accountable for the resulting injuries and damages. Injured victims or families of deceased victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Ventura personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held accountable.
