Comedian Robert Schimmel Killed in Arizona Car Accident

Standup comedian Robert Schimmel was killed in a car accident in Arizona, the Los Angeles Times reports. Schimmel was a passenger in a car driven by his 19-year-old daughter Aliyah. Officials say Aliyah Schimmel swerved to avoid another car when the vehicle she was driving rolled to the side of the freeway the night of August 26, 2010. Robert Schimmel was transported to a Phoenix hospital where he died September 3, 2010. His daughter has been hospitalized with injuries as well. But she is believed to be in stable condition.

My heart goes out to Robert Schimmel’s family, friends and numerous fans who enjoyed his comedy. He was a frequent guest on Howard Stern’s show as well as other shows such as “Late Night with Conan O’Brien.” I wish Aliyah Schimmel the very best for a speedy and complete recovery from her injuries. Please keep this grieving family in your thoughts and prayers.

Car Accident Causes

Based on this news report, it is not quite clear whose fault this accident was. There are still several questions here that the Schimmel family as well as the investigating authorities in Arizona must have. How fast was Aliyah traveling at the time? Whose fault was this accident? Did one of the drivers make an unsafe lane change? Was one of the drivers distracted or otherwise driving negligently? What type of car was Aliyah Schimmel driving? Was there a design flaw or an inherent auto product defect in the vehicle that caused it to tip over even at normal speeds? I trust officials are looking into these and other factors in order to determine how and why this tragedy occurred.

Liability Issues

If dangerous or reckless driving on the part of the other driver caused this accident, then, he or she could be held responsible for Robert Schimmel’s wrongful death and Aliyah Schimmel’s serious personal injuries. If an auto product defect caused or contributed to the accident, then, the auto maker or manufacturer of the defective product can also be held liable.
